Joint British-French Air Strike Hits Daesh Arms Cache in the Syrian region
British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.
The site, identified by intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts providing entry to the depot... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.
There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This operation shows British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.
RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," he said. "They were among numerous British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."
Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The UN reports Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
