A trader made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was publicly declared, sparking debate about potential gains made from confidential information of American actions.

Changing Odds in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the end of January increased in the period preceding former President Trump announced on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which registered on the site in December and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $436K from a modest bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Trading information shows that participants estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the prior Friday.

Yet the market's assessment had increased to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the early hours of Saturday, indicating a rapid movement in market sentiment just before the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a transaction based on non-public details," stated Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other platform users also profited significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

A bill presented on the start of the week aims to prohibit federal workers from making trades on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

Market Background

Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in the past few years, with participants able to wager on everything from sports to political events.

This sector were examined under the previous administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is a crime in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market industry.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
